First Fridays this month will feature the artwork of Inger Johanne Grytting, music by Bierwax, beer by US! Come celebrate on the waterfront!
About the Collection
Crossing the Brooklyn Bridge is the debut exhibition of the artist Inger Johanne Grytting's photographs. It features a range of images of the Brooklyn Bridge taken between 2012 and 2023. Grytting's focus on light and lines finds a means of expression in a photographic medium. She captures the bridge in a phase of repair where soft lines of work tarps contrast with stiff metal bridge beams. The photographs were inspired by Grytting's early morning walks across the bridge before she stood at her easel or drafting table. One can see echoes of the geometric work of her early graphite drawings. There is also a hint of the ochre-red light that pulses behind her minimalistic oil paintings. The photograph "F_25_2014: Brooklyn Bridge, October 26, 2014, 7:03 am" was on the cover of the latest issue of FICTION magazine, a literary journal that launched in the 1970s in NYC. Grytting served as its art director for over 40 years. Copies of FICTION No. 66 (2023) featuring Grytting's photography and collages will be available for purchase at the First Friday event. Past issues of FICTION with her work will also be available.
About the Artist
Inger Johanne Grytting (b. 1949) is a Norwegian-born, New York-based artist whose post-minimal drawings and paintings focus on the primal impulse of mark-making. The work is a meditation on what can and can't be controlled in the material, the hand, and the mind. In 1972, Grytting moved to the Bowery in New York City. She studied art at the City College of New York and worked as an assistant to Chaim Gross, later teaching his class at The Educational Alliance. In addition, Grytting was the art director of FICTION magazine for over forty years, where she connected international writers and visual artists. Inger Johanne Grytting’s artwork is exhibited internationally and collected by museums and private collections. Selected museum exhibitions include The Vigeland Museum (Oslo, Norway), and Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum (Tromsø, Norway). Her artworks are in the collection of The National Museum of Art (Oslo, Norway), Stavanger Kunstmuseum (Stavanger, Norway), Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum (Tromsø, Norway), KODE (Bergen, Norway), and others.
