Hop Culture and the Smithsonian's National Museum of Americanhistory announce the Industry Panel: Women in Beer History, hosted in NYC.

“He was a wise man who invented beer” - Plato

Actually Plato, “She was a wise women who invented beer.”

Since 4000BC Sumerian and Egyptian women have been brewing beer. Even as recently as the 16th century, women in the American colonies brewed at home and owned taverns. Join Theresa McCulla, Historian of the American Brewing History Initiative at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History along with other distinguished women scholars in the field of the history of women and brewing. Theresa will lead us back in time to learn about the original women brewers and journey to the 21st century, where we’ll toast to our present day pioneers. The evening will feature a panel discussion with:

Theresa McCulla - the first female historian of the American Brewing History Initiative at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

Tara Nurin - the official historian of Pink Boots Society, who has written articles outlining the history of women’s contribution to the world of beer for Craft Beer and Brewing Magazine.

Diana Pittet - Professor of graduate-level seminar, "History, Culture & Politics of Drinking," from the Neolithic period to the present day, in the Department of Food Studies and Nutrition at New York University.

Carol Stoudt - the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since prohibition and the founder of Stoudts Brewing Co. in Lancaster, P.A.

Tonya Hopkins - Food historian, wine specialist, and entrepreneur, assisting Harlem Hops with research on African beer making traditions .

We’ll end our celebration with light hor d'oeuvres and, of course, beer from Brooklyn brewery, Strong Rope Brewery . Additionally, each attendee will receive a custom Beers With(out) Beards and Smithsonian's National Museum of American History tumbler.
